goblining

What is goblining?

  1. goblining (always lower-case 'g') is a practice used by junior employees or members within a hierarchical organisation or institution. It is a form of activism.

  2. goblining subverts or manipulates the people or rules that control decisions and the allocation of resources within an institution.

  3. goblining always improves outcomes for the end-users of products or services, especially if they are vulnerable or disempowered in some way.

  4. goblining often improves outcomes for the people who work within an institution to provide services or create products.

What is goblining not?

  1. goblining is not the same as "goblin-mode", and the behaviours and attitudes associated with each concept are unlikely to be compatible.

  2. Nor is goblining to be confused with the term's use in video games.

  3. goblining is not "trolling" and it never involves interpersonal harassment or abuse. However, it may share some of the impish sensibilities of the more facetious forms of trolling. After all, goblining is about provoking a change or reaction among people or institutions with power, which can be implicitly funny.

Some example behaviours

  1. Malicious compliance and other forms of "uncivil obedience".
